A sky full of mangy candyfloss, with a hint of Turkish Delight. The pier, lit in bits, its body a long catapillar straddling the sea. And that stone and shingle beach, where dinosaurs once roamed, and fossils are tossed by the waves. The glorious, dirty pink of it. The wish-wash grey. The colour of a lost sweet; an old sock. Faded, but elegant. Sturdy against the sea, its boardwalk, in the wind, sometimes whistling. A little Taj Mahal. Peering at the pier, I spy a platform raised above the sea, set beneath the sky, dividing my vision half and half between the pleasing promenade and the serene-seeming water. Last night, though cold, the starlings came again. There are a thousand, now, at least. A year ago there seemed less - or did I just look down more than up, then? I think if I'd seen this huge, swirling sky-fingerprint I'd not have forgotten. The individual grains of so many dark birdbodies coming together and making their magic amongst the clouds. Last night, though cold (or perhaps because of it), the sky glowed pink and mauve, providing a soft curtain of colour against which these individual birds moved en masse. To see their wingtips flickering as they turn, and to hear them whirring as the birds move together, and to see the organic geometry of the shapes starlings make as they move, spin, and twirl together, is beyond sublime.
