Being a doll is easy. You just sit, and smile, and wait for a stranger to look, and wonder. Inside, you hold selves and selves, which the stranger can only guess at. All of them are smiling. But inside your most central self - yet another placid, placating version of you - is absence and ancient dust. A nothing so absolute that even you cannot fathom it. The stranger's gaze seems to see through to this centre... But you smile, and smile, and smile.
